The relationship between the East and West and the adjustment to western traditions and mores are two major themes Alaa Al-Aswani discusses in his novels Emarrat Ya'copian (2002) and Chicago (2008).These novels are mainly concerned with the themes of clash of civilization, interracial relationships, cultural traumas and the westernized intellectual groups crisis of identity in their traditional societies. In these novels Al-Aswani not only give us a direct image of the Egyptian society but most of the time, in the background, appears the shade of another society, a society each of the characters dreams of living in: that is the country of peace, justice and egalitarianism. That ideal hoped society most of the time is cited as being the western society in which most of the fictional characters in the novels subject to study spent long periods of their lifetime. However; Al-Aswani challenges this belief. He argues that most of these characters end up as failures and that life in the west is not successful all the time.
This paper revealed that the relationship between the East and West the pivotal axis around Al-Aswani's novels revolve. Reading through Emarra't Yacopian and Chicago, we find that the gap between the East and West; the colonized the colonizer; the third world and the advanced world ; the slave and master is all the time existing in the background of Al-Aswani's novels. Al-Aswani uses the relationship between the east and , especially in Chicago to challenge the common belief that the Western world is the utopia while the East is the dystopian place. Al-Aswani's representation of the topic significantly contribute to constructing the characters’ psychology, their visions of the world, embodying their aspirations and their fears, their feeling of well-being or unease, are not permanent and fixed but shaped by interests and are thus changeable.
