Research Interests

  • My research focuses on self-determination and the impact of interventions designed to promote self-determination on academic and transition outcomes for all students, including students with disabilities. My research is grounded in the theoretical framework of Causal Agency Theory that defines self-determination as a: dispositional characteristic manifested as acting as the causal agent in one’s life. Self-determined people (i.e., causal agents) act in service to freely chosen goals. Self-determined actions function to enable a person to be the causal agent in his or her life (Shogren et al., 2015, p. 258).
  • Enhancing skills associated with self-determination (e.g., goal setting and attainment, problem-solving, decision making, and choice-making) has gained considerable attention in special and general education. However, a lack of supports in school environments can create barriers for students, particularly those with disabilities, to act as causal agents who can set goals and take actions to make things happen in their lives. My research focuses on how to address this problem by identifying what opportunities that students need to develop their self-determination abilities as well as supporting teachers in enabling their students to enhance and apply self-determination to improve their quality of life. I specifically focus on two research lines of inquiry around: (a) assessing student self-determination to inform research-based practice to promote self-determination to improve school outcomes (e.g., academic outcomes), and (b) supporting educators to implement instructional designs that target enhancing self-determination in effective ways (e.g., enhancing implementation fidelity).
