Essam Sourour, Ph.D., Senior Member IEEE

He obtained Master degree in Electrical Engineering from Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt on March 1986. He obtained the Ph.D. from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, USA on 1990. In 1990 and 1991 he was a member of scientific staff in Nortel Networks (then, Bell Northern Research) working on the 2G TDMA cellular system standard. From 1991 to 1996 he was an Assistant Professor in Alexandria University, Egypt. During this time he was also a visiting researcher at Keio University from October 1993 to August 1994 and from January to April 1996. From 1996 to 2001 he was a Senior System Engineer at Ericsson Inc., Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA, where he worked on 2G and 3G CDMA cellular systems. From 2002 to 2004 he was a Director of System Engineering at Ellipsis Digital System, San Diego California, where he was in charge of the development of the physical layer of high speed WLAN based on the IEEE standards. Currently Dr. Sourour is a Professor at Alexandria University, Egypt. In summer 2004 and also from July to December 2005 he was a System Engineer in Symmid Corporation and a consultant with MIMOS Berhad, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since January 2007 Dr. Sourour is a Principal DSP Engineer and Director of DSP team at SySDSoft, Cairo, Egypt. In SySDSoft Mr. Sourour was responsible for the development of the physical layer of mobile WiMAX system with all PHY components according to WiMAX forum requirements. This includes Turbo coding, MIMO, HARQ and all necessary components. Also in SySDSoft Mr. Sourour was responsible for the development of the Physical layer of Zigbee and a selection of LTE physical layer components.

Dr. Sourour has more about 40 technical papers and 20 US patents. His industrial experience and academic research covers several aspects of 2G to 5G, WLAN and WMAN systems.
